    Double Dungeons

    ~ DOUBLE DUNGEONS ~

Yeah, the concept is simple: bumble around the maze until you level up a bit, purchase some equipment, find the key to the boss's room, and beat the boss. And yeah, the game is very repetitive, as you do the same thing in all twenty-two dungeons, and they all look the same. In spite of those facts, I actually like Double Dungeons a lot, for a number of reasons:

-The gameplay is incredibly fast-paced. You practically fly down the hallways, covering huge sections of the dungeon in mere moments; and with turbo revved up, you can rapid-hack right through almost every fight.

-It's an absolute BLAST in two-player mode. Something about teaming up and solving the dungeons together makes it so much more fun (even though I like it quite a bit when going solo anyway). Tackling the game with a partner typically leads to lengthy late-night sessions. And for whatever reason, I always get a kick out of encountering the other player.

-The title screen music ROCKS. Granted, it sounds kinda, uh, warbly in the middle, but those drums never let up. A pretty sinister and awesome tune.

-I like the pseudo-scrolling. It was accomplished through a very simple trick, but it looks so much smoother and better than the chop-chop-along movement in a lot of other old first-person games.

-I really like many of the enemy designs, though they may not be fine works of art. There are some surprisingly huge/grotesque monsters to deal with...

...and it's always fun to discover what sort of beast resides in the boss's room.

-The text messages that pop up as you explore the dungeons are pretty amusing. "ZOUNDS! IT'S DANGEROUS HERE." And the dungeon prologues/epilogues are even better, featuring eloquent tales like...

    Good stuff.

-Most people probably don't, but I dig the US box art.

Double Dungeons is a sweet game that everyone should give a fair shot, ideally in two-player mode. You might be surprised at how addictive and entertaining it can be.
